The lady Tollemache


Xa Tollemache learnt to garden at her home, Helmingham Hall, which she has extensively redesigned over the past 25 years. She started designing in 1996 and was asked to do a Chelsea Garden in 1997 where she won a gold medal. This was followed by two further Chelsea Gardens, winning two silver gilt medals. As well as designing gardens worldwide, Xa has completed several successful lecture tours and is a Garden Advisor to the RHS as well as serving on the Herbaceous Committee.

Xa is a passionate advocate of many local charities including The Digestive Disorder Foundation. In addition to being the President of Ormiston Children and Families Trust, East Anglia’s largest children’s charity, she recently completed a 160km trek along the Great Wall of China in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Car

Prof. J Lennard- Jones FRCP, FRCS

Vice President

Prof. John Lennard-Jones qualified in medicine at University College Hospital Medical School in 1953.  He was appointed Consultant Physician there and Consultant Gastroenterologist to St. Mark's Hospital in 1965 and subsequently appointed as Professor of Gastroenterology at the Royal London Hospital Medical College in 1975. 

He has been President of the British Society of Gastroenterology and is Life President of The Patients' Associaton, Crohn's and Colitis UK.  From 1992 - 2001 he was President in London of the National Charity, the Digestive Disorders Foundation. 

Prof. Lennard-Jones retired to Suffolk in 1995 and since then has been Vice President of the Digestive Disorders Foundation, Suffolk

Marjorie Thompson


Marjorie is a retired Speech and Language Therapist who worked full-time for the NHS at Ipswich Hospital until 2010 and also privately until 2015.  Her work involved assessing and treating adults with Acquired Speech and Swallowing disorders due to Stroke or other Neurological conditions. 

Her role involved being part of several multi-disciplinary teams, Stroke, Neurology and the Nutrition Team, which was led by Gastroenterologist Dr Miao. It was through this last connection that she became involved with the DDF as she wished to become involved with charity work post retirement.

She trained as a private secretary before becoming a Speech and Language Therapist and has previously been a school governor for a number of years.

Her interests are attempting to improve her golf and helping out with the grandchildren.

Judith Steward


Judith's been treasurer for DDF for more than 12 months, she is also on the I.B.D. patient panel at the local hospital. She was until recently treasurer, membership secretary etc. for the local group of Crohn's and Colitis UK which she did for a number of years.

She likes to cook and is always making cakes and scones and taking them to various meetings etc. She is also a keen swimmer.



Dr John Wyke


Dr Wyke is actively involved in the National Bowel Cancer Screening program in Suffolk and is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist. Working as part of multidisciplinary teams has enabled him to provide a more holistic approach to patient's clinical and psychological problems.

He has a particular interest in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of disorders affecting the gut or liver, including Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (IBD), gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn/GORD), anaemia, fatty liver and alcohol related problems.

In his spare time, John likes fly fishing, bird watching and music.
